Charging Levels Defined

  • For this wiki's definition, Level 1, 2 and 3 are as follows
    • Level 1 = “0” kW - 1.92 (2) kW AC
    • Level 2 = 1.92 (2) kW - 19.2 (20) kW AC
      • The 19.2 kW - 24 kW AC is not available in US, Europe has 400V 3 phase compared to US 240 1 phase.
    • Level 3 = 24 (20) kW and up DC fast chargers

  • Official EV Charging Levels (SAE J1772 Standard)

      • The official standard doesn’t use “Level 3” in the technical documents — it uses DC Fast Charging or DCFC — but “Level 3” is widely used in public conversation.
      • 19.2 kW AC → Officially Level 2 - 24 kW DC → Officially DC Fast Charging (DCFC)
      • There is no official “Level 2.5” or “slow Level 3” category, even though travelers often describe it that way.
